Mirren Fischer
Head of Design
Mirren is Head of Design at MDRxTech. She leads the product design and management teams to deliver fantastic customer experiences. Known for her combination of strategic and pragmatic approaches, her superpower is distilling complex problems into simple solutions.
Mirren brings almost 25 years of experience as a designer – first as a registered architect in the US, then as a start-up founder, then as a digital designer since 2009. She’s worked with ground-breaking start-ups and award-winning agencies on a diverse range of projects: from digitising the UK personal child health record to integrating virtual reality into architectural rendering to classifying social media content via machine learning.
One of her proudest moments includes designing a new scientific peer review system and moving the world’s largest open access scientific journal onto it within the course of a year, halving turnaround times for science to reach the public realm.
Immediately before joining MDRxTech, Mirren ran a consultancy focused on helping green-tech start-ups get to market. She continues her interest in all things sustainable by mentoring start-ups at the Imperial College- & Royal Institution-supported Centre for Climate Change Innovation. In both consulting and mentorship positions she’s driven value for these new companies by:
• helping them understand their markets and customers
• strategising about what to build when
• making sure their digital products are fit for purpose, usable, and delightful.
Mirren is extremely interested in the intersection between digital and physical worlds, which means she’s dived headfirst into the metaverse and is enjoying becoming an expert on design for web3.
As a leader Mirren still rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck in, but is now even more interested in encouraging new talent - either at MDRxTech or while helping upskill her clients’ staff. She’s taught entrepreneurship at the University of West London and expects to teach again.

I was doing a whole raft of different things (data analysis, science, engineering, software engineering, system administration, target analysis) when I started at the GCSB. I ended up specialising in data engineering as I enjoyed it the most out of all those disciplines.
What’s your proudest achievement?
Coaching the Lochinver House School under 11's C team to an unbeaten 2012 season while I was a PE assistant on my gap year
Which MXT value do you identify most with and why?
Allyship. Without a team that enjoys spending time together and has each other's backs, it's extremely hard to succeed.

I was lucky enough to have started working as a PA in a registered charity located in beautiful Sydney Harbour National Park. I then worked for a telecommunications giant and in financial regulation before moving into a career working for some of the world's top law firms. My organisational and relationship-building skills were definitely tested and honed there! That led me to MDRxTECH, supporting our CEO and COO, and I have loved the challenge of moving into a consultancy, learning so much about the tech world and the incredible projects that our clients are working on.

I came to software engineering through studying Biochemistry at university. During my studies I found that I loved working with computational software to study genomic data in languages such as R. I subsequently learnt Python in order to design models which simulate cell behaviour or scan DNA for CRISPR binding sites as well as study inter-atom interactions of proteins. I also worked in web-design and performed computational genetic engineering as head of DNA engineering for my university's iGEM team.
I've since fallen headfirst into pure software engineering after completing a nano degree with CFG, working full-stack in Javascript, Solidity and Python. I like the variety in my work and enjoy producing web2 content through React, alongside engineering blockchain components in smart contracts.
What's your secret skill?
I speak French!
Which MXT value do you identify most with and why?
Ownership. I love to learn by taking on tasks that seem challenging or out of my comfort zone, and provide myself the opportunity to diversify my skillset.

I love talking to people and finding everyday problems they have that are just a regular part of their routine. I like taking these issues and creating solutions for them to make their day-to-day life easier.
What has been your most exciting project so far?
Veloce. Having an avid interest in motorsport, building a metaverse for a racing company is something I love being a part of.

I got into consulting focusing on strategy and delivery in a slightly roundabout way - I didn't want to leave Manchester when I finished university so I stayed to get a Master's in Business Analysis & Strategic Management, which led me onto a consulting grad scheme at a multinational IT firm where I worked with public sector clients. I then spent some time working in sales and for the last two years I've been working in legal innovation/change management at a law firm. I wanted to be more client facing whilst still working on strategic projects so it felt like the right time to come back to consulting!

Senior Consultant Software Engineer
I got into software engineering by chance. I started out as a 3D Animator and spent 18 months living in New York doing an apprenticeship. I mostly worked as a 2D animator, and that then led to me wanting to learn how to code. I was fascinated by it!

Data Scientist
I didn’t always want to be a Data Scientist – I started out wanting to be a consultant and did a Master's in Business Analytics to enhance my data analysis skills. I soon found that I really enjoyed working with data and wanted to learn more about it, which led me eventually to my current role.
What motivates you?
I am always most motivated when I am being challenged, learning a lot, and working with people.
What has been your most exciting project so far?
Building BEIS' Open Regulatory Platform – it's never been attempted before and is both exciting and challenging.

Most exciting project you’ve been involved with recently?
You could've probably guessed, but I really do have to say the overall MXT project! I'm genuinely excited to be part of the journey as I think we've not even begun touched the surface on what we can achieve.
What motivates you?
I'm a fairly competitive person, whether that be to win a game or beat my own personal records. Finding motivation for myself can be as simple as agreeing a milestone and then going after it!
On days when it's harder to find motivation I find myself being motivated by people. We're fortunate to have a world class team here at MXT and it is almost impossible to be demotivated when you're used to seeing your colleagues and friends achieving excellence!
